MK 46 Mod 0

The MK46 MOD 0 is a special model of the M249 developed to meet a US Special Operations requirement for a lightweight variant of the M249 that would retain the intrinsic functionality and reliability of the standard model.

A 4.1 pound weight reduction was achieved by using a new lightweight barrel (available in standard and fluted) and removing the carrying handle, magazine well and vehicle mounting lugs (for vehicle applications).

Unique to the MK46 MOD0 is Picatinny Rails that accommodate scopes, laser designators and flashlights.  It also has a forward pistol grip and a detachable bipod.

This weapon has been adopted by the US Navy.
